What's this all about? How do I get involved?

Why: SuperAmerica has launched a national campaign to rally the public to oppose Cap and Trade and call their senators in opposition (http://www.ourenergyvoice.com/). We want them to know that Minnesotans stand for green jobs, clean energy, and a climate future free of global tragedy!

The news on the devastating moral and physical implications of climate change is getting grimmer by the day. The Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki Moon has called the world to action. “The world needs you to actively push for a fair, effective and ambitious deal in Copenhagen. Fail to act, and we will count the cost for generations to come.” ( http://www.unep.org/Documents.Multilingual/Default.asp?DocumentID=596&ArticleID=6316&l=en)

There is lots of great momentum moving us towards big change: The US Senate has the potential to pass a strong American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES) this fall. They need to hear that Minnesotans are behind them! We hope this boycott will help expose the truth about our dirty energy economy, and bring attention to the positive economic growth that will come from responsible climate legislation.

Who: A group of activists in the twin cities in conjunction with students from Macalester, St. Thomas, Augsburg, the University of Minnesota and other area colleges. The group includes writers, artists, politicians, and many students. We are looking for folks to help us with poster making, blogging, media, picketing out side of SuperAmerica stations, and hosting letter writing campaigns.

What: A boycott of SuperAmerica stations in Minnesota during the month of October 2009. We will be holding kick-off protests outside of select Super America stations during rush hour on October 5 and 6. We will have art, we will have conversations, we will reach out to residents in the Twin Cities to engage in dialogue about our real ‘energy future.' We will have a postcard writing campaign to let Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken know that we expect a STONG and realistic ACES bill. And we will definitely have FUN!

When: We will have a rally and poster making party on Sunday October 4th from 5 to 8 pm. Location is the Common Ground located at 2154 Summit Avenue on the St. Thomas Campus. Jack Nelson Pallmeyer, and Jenna Garland (Clean Water Action) will be speaking.

The boycott will happen during the month of October with protesters present at the 44th and Lake Street station, The Cleveland and Grand Station, and the Lyndale Station on October 5 and 6.

Contact: Julia Nerbonne at jnerbonne@gmail.com if you would like to get involved.

Yes We Can - Pass Climate Legislation

Critical Partnership between senator John Kerry (D-MA) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is formed to push Climate Legislation forward this year. Read their Opinion piece in the NYTimes. This may be just the break we are looking for!

Check out some of the press on our Boycott

News Story on Thursday 10-8-09 on KFAI radio. Great piece that interviews 4 of the protesters and does a good job explaining the details. If you download the 30 minute news on MP3, fastforward to about minute 9 or 10. The story is about 5 minutes.

Tommie Media covers the protest at Cleveland and Grand. A little too much focus on the bad words "Cap and Trade" but very nice anyway.

Did anyone catch our interview on MN News Network a week ago Thursday?

Critiquing SuperAmerica's logic

Below are links to a good analysis of the problems with the Heritage Foundation study that generated most of the numbers that are reported on SA's pumps.

In short:

They don't model the cost of inaction, and they don't include any analysis of the jobs that will be gained from a clean energy system.

Religious Community Stands for Climate Legislation

I thought this list of talking points from the fighting poverty with faith website was really great:

MESSAGING—WHAT DOES "GOOD JOBS, GREEN JOBS" HAVE TO DO WITH CLIMATE AND ENERGY?

1. Scientists tell us "global warming is real; the science is sound; and the effects are likely to be
severe." As people of faith, we are called to care for all of God's children, especially the most
vulnerable, and to protect and restore God's creation. Climate change is a threat to all people
and all of creation. There are currently energy and climate bills moving through both the House
and the Senate, calling for emissions reductions, and mitigation and adaptation support both at
home and abroad.

2. A green job has to pay decent wages and benefits that can support a family. It has to be part of a real career path, with upward mobility. And it needs to reduce waste and pollution and benefit
the environment.

3. Addressing climate change is a justice issue. The effects of climate change are already being felt the most by those who can least afford to deal with its effects. And as the climate continues to change, the impact will be more keenly felt both by low-income communities in the U.S. and
least developed and developing nations abroad. Water scarcity, drought, crop failure, increased
disease, and flooding are just a few of the impacts. All of these climate and energy bills will have
a green jobs component – even if it is just an indirect one by mandating new industries.

Action Alert Text:

As a person of faith, I am deeply concerned with the impact of global climate change on
God’s people and God’s Creation. Leading scientists and scientific bodies including the
National Academy of Sciences predict that the impacts of climate change have and will
dramatically and negatively alter God's gracious gift of Creation. These impacts will have
a disproportionate impact on those living in poverty and suffering from hunger, as well
as the elderly, infants, communities of color and those least responsible for greenhouse
gas emissions.

Climate change legislation should set mandatory measures to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions to the levels called for by respected scientific bodies, while protecting and
providing for those living in poverty both in the United States and abroad. This bill
should provide more money for those living in poverty around the world who are
already suffering from the impacts of climate change and more money for green and
sustainable jobs in our communities. It should also support renewable energy and
energy efficiency that will lower costs for consumers, reduce air pollution and provide
jobs for struggling communities around the country. I urge you to strengthen and
support the American Clean Energy and Security Act as a first step toward addressing
the moral issue of our time.
